Discovery Night at The Farmstead Rescheduled for Oct. 6

Due to last night's heavy rain, Discovery Night at The Farmstead has been rescheduled for 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6.

The Farmstead owner has decided to close today because of the muddy conditions. But the 10-day forecast shows that the weather will be improving. Right now, next Monday looks like it will be sunny and in the 70s!

We are sorry about this inconvenience, and we hope to see you next Monday to enjoy fall festivities with other Discovery families!

Help Support PE, Music, and Library with Labels for Education

Back in the day, my family always saved Campbell’s soup labels to send in to benefit my elementary school. At the time, I didn’t realize that it was known as the Labels for Education program, which has been benefiting schools for 40 years.

Even now that I’m focused on clipping the Labels for Education for Discovery, I sometimes forget the magnitude of the program: 2,500 participating products from brands like Campbell’s, Dannon, Pepperidge Farm, Post, and V8.

The points that Discovery receives from Labels for Education benefit our PE, music, and library teachers. Those teachers can redeem the points in the Labels for Education catalog for a variety of merchandise.

You can find all of the participating products at http://www.labelsforeducation.com/Earn-Points/Participating-Products. Take a look, and start clipping!

Mr. Johnson Takes Lead in "Kiss A Pig" Contest

After tallying the students' pennies today, Mr. Johnson has taken the lead and is getting closer to kissing a pig at Discovery Night at The Farmstead next Monday, Sept. 29.

Mr. Bonebrake and Mrs. Rojas are not far behind in second and third places, respectively. However, don't count anyone out. Students can continue to bring in their pennies through Friday to vote for the teacher they think should kiss the pig! The wining teacher will be announced on the afternoon of Sept. 29.

Here are the totals after Tuesday's count:
  • Mr. Johnson, PE/Health: $41.91
  • Mr. Bonebrake, ERR: $29.53
  • Mrs. Rojas, Kindergarten: $28.58
  • Mrs. Drlik, Second Grade: $15.85

Help Your Children Become Discovery Millionaires

The Cat in the Hat’s pals, Thing 1 and Thing 2, made a guest appearance at Discovery Elementary yesterday to announce the Million Minutes Reading Challenge!

The Discovery PTA is challenging students to work together to read 1 million minutes this school year. If each student reads 10 minutes a day outside of school over the next seven months, it will total more than 1 million minutes.

Students in pre-K through second grade may count minutes that they read orally or that someone else reads to them, while students in third through fifth grade must only county minutes that they read on their own. Reading calendars will be sent home to help the PTA track reading minutes, and each calendar should be signed by a parent and sent back to school at the end of each month.

Students will be able to keep track of the school’s reading minutes and be reminded about the reading challenge throughout the school year on a bulletin board outside the cafeteria. A mustang will travel along a path as more minutes are accumulated.

There will be incentives along the way.  Every student who reads 300 minutes (or more) in October will receive a coupon for a free kid’s meal and a slice of pie from Marie Callender’s.  And the top reader from the primary grades and the top reader from the intermediate grades will get to select a free book each month.

When Discovery reaches its million milestone in the spring, the Discovery PTA will throw a Million Minutes Reading Celebration to reward students and their families! There will be games, activities, and projects inspired by books.

Parents, we can’t do this Million Minutes Reading Challenge without you. We encourage you to get your children excited about reading and help make them Discovery millionaires!

As Walt Disney said, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.

Be sure to check the box of the teacher of your choice, and bring the bottom half of the form back to school with your pennies in the attached baggie on Monday, Sept. 22, through Friday, Sept. 26.

Thank you, parents, for getting the ball rolling by making donations at Back to School Night. Here are the current standings:

  • Mr. Bonebrake, ERR: $24.82
  • Mrs. Rojas, Kindergarten: $15.40
  • Mrs. Howard, First Grade: $5.26
  • Mr. Johnson, PE/Health: $2.32
  • Mrs. Drlik, Second Grade: $1.66

We will keep you posted next week after each day's pennies are tallied, and then the winning teacher will be announced on the afternoon of Sept. 29!

We hope we will see you all at The Farmstead from 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 29 to have a wonderful fall evening with other Discovery families. Plus, don't miss out on cheering on the winning teacher at 7:30 p.m. during the racing pigs show.

Admission to The Farmstead for Discovery families is $5.25, and if students wear a Discovery bracelet or shirt, admission is only $4.25 (plus, The Farmstead will donate $1 for each admission to the Discovery PTA). The admission includes the MAiZE, hayrides, jumping pillow, cow train, corn box, spider web, and slides. It is only $3 extra for your choice of three activities not included in the general admission, such as the Haunted Creature, pony rides, and pumpkin blaster shots.

Popcorn Fridays to Return in October

Students will be excited to hear that Popcorn Fridays are returning to Discovery in October. Bags of popcorn will be delivered to classrooms on the first Friday of each month, starting Oct. 3, as well as one bonus day, May 22.

To purchase popcorn, students can bring in 50 cents each Popcorn Friday, or parents can save some time and money by prepaying for popcorn at Back to School Night on Tuesday, Sept. 16. To prepay for the entire year is $4, which saves you 50 cents and your children’s wrath when you forget to send two quarters in on a Popcorn Friday during the school year.

The Popcorn Friday schedule is:
  • Oct. 3
  • Nov. 7
  • Dec. 5
  • Jan. 9
  • Feb. 6
  • March 6
  • April 3
  • May 1
  • May 22

The Discovery PTA also is still looking for a Popcorn Friday coordinator. If you are interested, please email Michelle Hall at discoveryPTA@gmail.com.

PTA Reflections 2014-15 Program Announced

Flyers will be coming home with students this week about the annual PTA Reflections program, which gives your children an opportunity to express themselves artistically for fun and recognition.

The theme for the 2014-15 program is “The World Would Be a Better Place if …” Students can show their creativity in dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts.

The students must create their pieces independently and from their own perspectives, and they may also participate in one or all of the categories. Each work of art must be submitted with the artist’s statement and the entry form. However, parents may help fill out the entry forms. The deadline for entries is Friday, Nov. 7, 2014.

Encourage your children to think about how the world could be a better place and how they can portray their feelings through different mediums.

Specific rules for each category can be found at http://www.idahopta.org/REFLECTIONS.html.

The entry form is below. If you have additional questions or would like a pdf of the entry form, please email Reflections Chair Brooke Cleverly at discoveryPTA@gmail.com
