PTA Seeking Food Donations

Can you we believe we already made it to parent-teacher conferences? The school year is flying by. To help out our teachers, the PTA will be providing snacks to fuel them up for their conferences after school Wednesday, Oct. 24, and an early dinner on Thursday, Oct. 25.

We are still looking for donations for our snack cart, such as soda, chips, and granola bars. If you can donate, please sign up at (if the link doesn't work, please cut and paste): https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b4da5a72aaafe3-staff

We also still need a few desserts and a veggie tray for Thursday's dinner. Here's the link for that: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b4da5a72aaafe3-parentteacher

Thank you Discovery families for your support!

Spirit Wear Orders Due Nov. 16

The PTA received a lot of Spirit Wear interest after our first order so we will be placing a second one for the holidays. Orders will be due by Friday, Nov. 16, with deliveries in early December.

We offer basic and performance tees in navy and maroon for $11 and $13, respectively. Hoodies only come in navy and are $28. I recommend sizing up on the hoodies to get a couple of years out of them!

Print and send in the order form below to your student's teacher with cash or check made out to Discovery PTA. We also will have a table at the late night of Book Fair, with a few sample sizes of the tees. If you have any questions, please email discoverypta@gmail.com.

Join Discovery Families Monday Night at The Farmstead

Discovery Night at The Farmstead is finally here. Come out from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, for fall fun at The Farmstead with other Discovery families. The highlight of the night will be when the teacher who brought in the most pennies (and other money) last week gets to smooch a swine. Keep an eye out for that announcement on Monday on Facebook; it also will be announced for students at school.

We raised over $500 during our penny contest. Thank you to our brave teacher contestants and to the generous students and their families! The Farmstead also will donate $1 for each Discovery admission, so be sure to tell them you're from Discovery when you pay. Don't miss this great event.

Who Will Kiss a Pig at Discovery Night at the Farmstead?

Discovery students are voting with their pennies (and other coins and dollars) this week on who they want to see smooch a swine at Discovery Night at The Farmstead on Monday, Oct. 15. Fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Haycock has a solid lead for now, but it's still early in the week.

Students can bring in their pennies in a bag through Friday. Just be sure to write down the teacher's name for who you are voting. The winning teacher will be announced at school on the afternoon of Oct. 15, and then you can see the winner kiss the pig at 7:30 p.m. that night at The Farmstead. We can't thank our great staff members who volunteered to get up close and personal with a pig!

All of the money raised from the Kiss a Pig voting as well as the donation from The Farmstead ($1 for each Discovery admission will be donated back to the PTA) will help support schoolwide activities this school year.

We will be updating the blog and bulletin board to reflect the latest totals. Here's how the competition is stacking up so far:

  • Mrs. Haycock, 5th: $17.25
  • Mrs. Kearns, K: $8.34
  • Mrs. Morris, 4th: $1.25

  • Mr. Hawkins, 3rd: $0.10
  • Mrs. Howard, 1st: $0.05

October Volunteer Opportunities

The PTA is gearing up for a busy October, and we are looking for volunteers as well as donations for parent-teacher conferences. We know everyone is busy, but we really appreciate any help you can provide this month. Your support helps the PTA better serve our students and staff!

1. Discovery Dashers: Thanks to the parents who helped count laps last week for Discovery Dashers! Mrs. Jensen will continue to need volunteers to help track running and walking laps from 2:30 to 2:45 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Fourth- and fifth-graders will be on the track on Mondays and Thursdays, while first-, second-, and third-graders will do their laps on Tuesdays and Fridays. E-mail jensen.jessica@westada.org if you're able to volunteer.

2. Walk to School Day: Wednesday, Oct. 10, is our annual walk-to-school day. We need help passing out milk and some other goodies to students as they arrive to school. If you're walking to school with your student, stop by to help us fuel up the kids!

3. Popcorn Friday: Friday, Oct. 12, is Popcorn Friday. The PTA bags popcorn at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria that morning. If you have any extra time, please stop by to help scoop popcorn and socialize with other Discovery families.

4.  Staff Snacks and Dinner: Parent-teacher conferences are coming up at the end of the month. The PTA will be organizing a snack cart for Wednesday, Oct. 24, and a late-afternoon dinner on Thursday, Oct. 25, for our staff. We have sign-up sheets for both, if you are interested in donating food or supplies.

We appreciate all of your support!
